HISTORY

The Veresegyház Bear Sanctuary, built on an area of five and a half hectares, is the only Bear Sanctuary in Central Europe, which was created with the cooperation of the World Organization for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) and the Municipality of Veresegyháza. After almost half a year of work, the designated area became suitable for receiving bears, so in 1998 the bears, which had been living in bad conditions until then, were relocated from Gödöllő.

An important aspect of the design of the area was that the visitors could see the animals completely safely, up close, without disturbing them. The type and number of animals living in the Medveotthon is constantly changing, as specimens arrive here from all over the country. Medveotthon accepts animals from private farms, other zoos and from abroad. The Medveotthon is owned and maintained by the Municipality of Veresegyház.

The Medveotthon quickly became known, and is currently the third most visited zoo in the country. It has an average of 200,000 visitors a year. Medveotthon received zoo certification in the fall of 2009.
In the summer of 2000, the Medveotthon was expanded with an enclosure suitable for wolves. A forested area of nearly one and a half hectares provides conditions similar to their natural habitat. A new wolf enclosure was built at the beginning of 2015, and another enclosure was created in 2021, and our pet wolves currently live there.

The birdlife that can be observed is also worth mentioning. It is a great experience to observe the ravens, crows, and mallards on the lake, but we also occasionally see gray herons and starlings. There is a lot of bustle, especially at feeding time.
In the area surrounded by a protective system, fifteen caves with a narrow entrance but with bays, as well as two lakes of 160 square meters each, were created for the bears, which provide them with drinking water and the opportunity to play. And the wooded area belonging to the bears' enclosure offers the pleasure of climbing trees, hiding and cooling off.

The area of Medveotthon is constantly being built, beautified, and changed. It has now become an unmissable tourist attraction, only 25 km from Budapest. It also expands its entertainment options, so children can find a playground, a small locomotive, a teddy bear lift, and can press different coins in the area of the Bear Home.
Since 2017, the Medveotthon has been housing three lynxes.

The lion house was built in 2019 and is currently home to 12 lions. In 2022, a new line of pens was established in the area behind the bears, where fallow deer, mouflon, and Hungarian rack sheep are presented. On the right side of the road leading to Medveotthon, visitors can see gray cattle.
